Du latin populaire de Gaule et d’Italie tottus (redoublement emphatique ou expressif), altération du latin classique totus (« tout, chaque, tout entier »), maintenu en Ibérie : au français tout et à l’italien tutto, s’opposent l’espagnol todo et le portugais tudo.
